After our miscarriage in August, I started researching all the natural ways to boost fertility. For some reason, I had it in my head that getting pregnant again was going to be a challenge for me. So I did all the research, ordered all the things, and before the items could even be delivered, I was pregnant again.

Nonetheless, I persisted in creating a fertility boosting recipe with what I had learned from my research, even though I wouldn’t be able to eat it. (I’ve cut out maca and other adaptogens since becoming pregnant per my midwife’s recommendation.) My husband and friends taste-tested for me. Btw, this recipe is totally safe for men and can also help boost their fertility. It is not just for women.

The result: PB & Goji bars.

These bars contain special adaptogens known to help boost fertility, and can be helpful for BOTH women and men: Maca and Shatavari.

You may already be familiar with maca, as it is very popular for energy, hormone-balance, and stress.

The lesser-known Shatavari is actually the root of asparagus! The name translates literally to “woman of a thousand husbands” and it has been known to help unknown causes of infertility for hundreds and thousands of years.

However, I would not recommend these herbs if you are already pregnant. Always consult your healthcare professional first. This recipe could be made without the maca and shatavari and still contain many health benefits.

These bars are fairly simple to make, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar free. There are two layers: the bottom peanut butter oat maca layer, and the top goji chia shatavari jam layer.


Ingredients:

Peanut Butter Oat Maca Layer:

  • 1.5 cups oat flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1/3 cup maca powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil

Goji Chia Shatavari Jam layer:

  • 1.5 cups dried goji berries
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 cup Shatavari Root powder
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 TBSP Chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar
  • 3 TBSP honey or maple syrup

Directions:

Peanut Butter Oat Maca Layer:

  1. Combine all ingredients
  2. line a 9-inch square pan with parchment paper
  3. Make Peanut butter layer in the pan
  4. Refrigerate while we move on to next layer

Goji Chia Shatavari Jam Layer:

  1. Add goji berries and water to a sauce pan and let soak for one hour
  2. Bring to medium heat, add lemon, chia seeds, coconut sugar and maple syrup
  3. Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring regularly, until thickens
  4. Layer Goji jam on top of peanut butter layer and refrigerate again.
  5. Cut bars into approximately 16 square pieces, to ensure daily adaptogen dose isn’t too high, and eat no more than one per day.
