Triphala is a reknown Ayurvedic digestive tonic made from a blend of three medicinal fruits: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki.  It is known to be a gentle, balancing cleanser with anti-inflammatory and other healing properties.

I bought Sun Potion Organic Triphala with the intention of drinking it every night before bed as part of a new nightly ritual. 🙂 Here is the Sun Potion product description.

They also point to the following studies on Triphala in support of its claims (search “Triphala” on PubMed and you will find even more studies on the impressive benefits of Triphala! Of late, most seem to be related to dental care):

Potential of traditional ayurvedic formulation, Triphala, as a novel anticancer drug.

Antiinflammatory effect of the Indian Ayurvedic herbal formulation Triphala on adjuvant-induced arthritis in mice.

Triphala, Ayurvedic formulation for treating and preventing cancer: a review.

And this review by Ayurvedic Expert Kellen Brugman on Triphala:

“I love Triphala!”
It is a staple of the ayurvedic medicine cabinet and combines 3 unique fruits (Haritaki, Amalaki, and Bibhitaki) to balance and harmonize the 3 Doshas (3! a Sacred Number!)  Triphala is most known as a mild tonic for the digestion (it gently removes built up toxins from the elimination system without stripping any vital nutrients) AND it supports respiratory and circulatory systems. It is a very simple, balancing, anti-infammatory formula which has been used for hundreds of years.

Sounds pretty great, right?

Except for one thing. The taste. is. awful. (in my opinion) I feel like I’m drinking sewage water straight from a Ninja Turtles scene.

The recommended usage is to combine 1/2 tsp triphala powder with warm water or tea. In my opinion, there isn’t a tea in the world flavorful enough to make the triphala unnoticeable.

I knew I needed to come up with a way to drink triphala that would REALLY hide the taste, so I could enjoy this new nightly ritual and actually stick to it.

I needed something more potent. Something magic. Something CHOCOLATE…

But it also needed to be really simple or else I wouldn’t stick to it.

What I came up with is a 2 minute hot cocoa recipe, which in itself, contains nothing but good-for-you ingredients.

If chocolate late in the day disrupts your sleep cycle, this recipe isn’t for you, unfortunately. My husband is this way. I will try to come up with a non-chocolate recipe for you in the future!

1.5 cups filtered water

1-2 tsp Manitoba Hemp Hearts

1 tsp Raw Organic Cacao Powder

1 tsp local raw wildflower honey or Wedderspoon Manuka Honey

1/2 tsp Sun Potion Triphala

  1. Combine ingredients in Vitamix blender
  2. Blend for 2-3 minutes, or until warm.
  3. Enjoy as part of your nightly routine 2-3 hours before bed.

If you don’t have a Vitamix blender, or don’t want to heat up the drink in your Vitamix, you can heat up the water separately first, and then combine all ingredients in any kind of blender/mixing bottle to combine.
